FILM OVERVIEW & TRAILER

The Fort is a documentary on the history of the old Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP), the opening of the new ISP, and a profile of its inmates and staff.

OVERVIEW
The Fort is three documentaries in one:

  • A history of the old Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP) — nicknamed “The Fort” — founded in 1839 and, at the time of its closing in 2015, the oldest prison west of the Mississippi River;
  • A look at the new state-of-the-art Iowa State Penitentiary; and
  • A profile of the inmates and staff who make “The Fort” a surprisingly human institution
